October 08, 2025 7 min read Saikat Bepari

Andaman has a tropical climate — warm and humid year-round. But there's a significant difference between visiting in November (absolutely glorious) and August (ferries cancelled, beaches closed). This guide breaks down every month so you can plan confidently.

Quick Answer

Best Months
Oct – Mar

Perfect weather, all activities open, clear seas

Best Value
Apr – May, Oct

Good weather, 20–30% cheaper, fewer tourists

Avoid For Water Activities
Jun – Sep

Monsoon — rough seas, many closures, discounts

Three Seasons Explained

🌞 Peak Season: October to May

The northeast monsoon brings dry weather and calm seas. Water visibility peaks at 30–40m. All islands, ferries and activities are fully operational. December–February sees the highest tourist volumes and prices.

⭐ Shoulder Transition: October & April–May

October is the sweet spot — seas are calming from monsoon, 20–30% cheaper than peak but the weather is already good. April–May is hot but crowd-free with good visibility underwater.

🌧️ Monsoon: June to September

The southwest monsoon brings heavy rainfall and rough seas. Ferry services are often cancelled or reduced. Scuba, snorkeling and most beach activities are suspended. However, Baratang is still accessible and hotel prices drop by 40–50%.

Peak Season (November – March)

This is when Andaman is at its absolute best. The sea is calm, visibility underwater is exceptional, and every activity operates normally. December and January are the most popular months — book everything at least 3–4 weeks ahead.

Peak Season Tips

  • • Ferries (especially Makruzz/Green Ocean) sell out — book at least 3 weeks ahead
  • • Popular resorts on Havelock are fully booked by early October for December
  • • Activity prices are highest — compare operators before booking
  • • The Cellular Jail Light Show fills up — pre-book tickets online
  • • Water is clearest in January–February: scuba visibility 30–40m

Shoulder Season (April–May & October)

October is arguably the best-value month in Andaman. The monsoon has eased, seas are calming, and hotel prices are 20–30% lower than December. Most activities are already operational. April–May is hot but excellent for underwater activities (fewer tourists = more attentive dive masters).

Shoulder Season Advantages

  • • Hotel prices 20–30% lower than peak season
  • • Ferries available — no need to book weeks ahead
  • • Beaches less crowded for a more peaceful experience
  • • Dive operators give more attention with fewer clients
  • • April–May: water temperature at its warmest (30–31°C)

Monsoon Season (June – September)

Honest advice: avoid visiting primarily for beaches and water sports during monsoon. However, if you're on a very tight budget or want a completely different experience, there are still things to do:

✅ What's Still Possible

  • • Baratang day trip (roads remain open)
  • • Cellular Jail & Port Blair sightseeing
  • • Forest treks (guides required)
  • • Museum visits
  • • Very cheap hotel rates (40–50% discount)

❌ What Closes / Gets Difficult

  • • Inter-island ferries (frequent cancellations)
  • • Scuba diving, snorkeling (near-zero visibility)
  • • North Bay, Jolly Buoy (close for maintenance)
  • • Elephant Beach (inaccessible by sea)
  • • Most beach shack restaurants

Festivals & Events

Jan
Island Tourism Festival — Cultural performances, food stalls, water sports demonstrations, traditional dances. Held at Corbyn's Cove.
Jan 23
Subhash Mela — Celebrated at Cellular Jail in honour of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Cultural and patriotic events.
Feb
Andaman Water Sports Festival — Competitive water sports events at Corbyn's Cove. Great to watch even if not participating.
Nov 1
Andaman & Nicobar Foundation Day — State holiday with cultural celebrations across Port Blair.

Booking Tips by Season

📅 When to Book What

  • Peak season (Dec–Feb) ferries: Book 3–4 weeks before travel — private ferries sell out completely
  • Peak season hotels: Book 2–3 weeks ahead on Havelock; Port Blair has more availability
  • Shoulder season: 1 week ahead for ferries, 3–5 days for hotels is usually sufficient
  • Activities: Most can be booked 1 day ahead year-round — except during peak season at popular operators
  • Cellular Jail Light Show: Book online at least 3–5 days ahead, December–February
