Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): A Hidden Paradise in Andaman

August 11, 2025 7 min read Saikat Bepari

Neil Island, officially renamed Shaheed Dweep, is a tranquil gem in the Andaman archipelago. Less commercialised than Havelock, this island offers pristine beaches, unique geological formations, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for those seeking serenity. If Havelock is the party island, Neil is where you come to breathe.

1. Natural Bridge (Howrah Bridge)

The crown jewel of Neil Island, this naturally formed coral rock bridge bears a striking resemblance to Kolkata's famous Howrah Bridge. Best viewed during low tide when the water recedes to reveal the full arch structure.

Best Viewing Times

  • Early morning (6–8 AM)
  • Late afternoon (4–6 PM)
  • Low tide periods (check tide tables)
  • Golden hour for photography

What to Bring

  • Camera / phone for photos
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun protection
  • Water bottle

⚠️ Important Note

The Natural Bridge was partially damaged in recent cyclones. Parts of it have eroded over the years — but what remains is still stunning. Always check the tide schedule and visit during low tide for the best view.

2. Laxmanpur Beach

Divided into Laxmanpur Beach I and II, these interconnected beaches offer some of the best sunset views in Andaman and excellent shell collecting during low tide. The beach glows a deep orange at sunset — don't miss it.

🌅 Laxmanpur Beach I

  • • Best for sunset viewing
  • • White sand and clear water
  • • Perfect for photography
  • • Rocky formations and tidal pools

🏖️ Laxmanpur Beach II

  • • Excellent for swimming
  • • Shell and coral fragment collecting
  • • Less crowded than Beach I
  • • Natural tide pools to explore

3. Bharatpur Beach

The most popular beach on Neil Island, Bharatpur features calm, shallow waters ideal for swimming, snorkelling and water sports. The coral reefs here begin very close to shore, making it accessible even without boats.
